I always hate to see a great actor in a bad movie–a movie so lame and hopeless that it offers no opportunity for the great actor to even make the bad movie any better. The Blood Lands is… Continue reading

Yes! I admit it. I just got around to watching Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Believe it or not, it’s true. How could you possibly wait so long, you ask? Twelve years to be exact? The answer is… Continue reading

If I’m lucky, after watching a movie for free, I am relieved of more than spending my own money on it; If lucky, I’m also spared the act of wasting time and witnessing other people waste theirs as well–wasting it to make … Continue reading

It is almost amazing that a movie about warring conservatives and liberals would be made during such volatile political times. Perhaps now, as things are worse than ever, such a movie wouldn’t be made; perhaps a bit earlier was just… Continue reading

Tony (written and directed by Gerard Johnson) is a movie exactly about what it is sometimes subtitled–a “London Serial Killer”–ironically, far from the banality implied. As the tagline says, “It’s always the quiet ones.” Yes! If ever there was a misfit man who could be a killer, flaunting his psycho profile to the world, all the while looking utterly harmless, it would be a man like Tony… Continue reading

In my years watching horror films, I’ve accumulated a book’s worth of advice for surviving one. Yes! Life in a horror movie is a close call at death every minute. Arteries are cut, necks are broken, bodies are eviscerated… Continue reading

I am often asked who I think is the “scariest” of movie monsters. It’s a clichéd question, dragged through the blood of and gore of movie-loving minds the world over. Sometimes the answer is impulsive and easy, as it should be; other times, with more thought and criteria, and the need to justify, it’s not so easy at all. Continue reading

Recently, on a weekend night at Walmart, in a one of those big, bargain movie bins (the one’s that have movies overflowing to the top, spilling onto the floor as you try to find the one you want), I found a bluray copy of 10 Cloverfield Lane. Continue reading

What happens when you take millions of pounds of steroid-laced chicken poop, as much chemical pollution from agricultural runoff, add a radioactive water leak, and throw it all into a bay inhabited by carnivorous isopods that shouldn’t be there? Who knows! But, with such a mixture of really bad things, no outcome could be good. Continue reading

Fighting your inner demons has never been more intense than it is in Familiar—the new short horror film written and directed by Richard Powell. “After 45 years of existence, my life is about to begin,” is the quote that best sums up the plot, without giving away a story as unique as any I’ve seen in a long time. “Once upon a time, there was an old woman who lived in a lonely cottage” in the country? Yes, of course, it was the country. Or, was it really a house in the city? According the Brothers Grimm, it surely was a cottage, most idyllic and unlike the urban home in Rose White. Continue reading
